Akathisia is a common side effect experienced from certain antipsychotic medications. I broke down and took 300 mg of gabapentin last night-my dr. and my mother had been begging me to try something cause I’ve been getting worse. It seemed to to tone down the Akathesia for the night, but I got no sleep on it,it just made me loopy. Has anyone who’s tried this gotten any sleep on it? Gabapentin did not help my chronic akathisia AT ALL (long story, misdiagnosed at one point, tons of unnecessary neuroleptics for years). AND, it made my arthralgia worse (or so it seemed at the time). gabapentin for akathisia? Anyone here been prescribed this specifically for leg symptoms? I have the issue where my legs are always tight like flexing and restless and this was a possible medication that was suggested. Looking for any thoughts. Thanks. The first patient participated in an open Theoretically, gabapentin enhances the activity of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), an inhibitory neurotransmitter that would be predicted to suppress the abnormal involuntary movements of akathisia. List of antipsychotic drugs that can cause akathisia Not everyone taking an antipsychotic drug gets the disorder. Here's a list of different things that have helped, based on different studies they've found: Mirtazapine, Propranolol, Mianserin, B6, Clonidine, Benztropine, Trazodone, Cyproheptadine, Biperiden, Gabapentin, and Ketamine. See their comment at that link above for links to the different studies. To our knowledge, this is the first reported cases of akathisia induced by gabapentin withdrawal. Available case reports suggest that gabapentin withdrawal can occur at doses ranging from 400-8000 mg/day. Patients experienced symptoms similar to those that develop with benzodiazepine withdrawal and were taking gabapentin for as little as 3 weeks to as long as 5 years. It said online that it can help with that. I’m prescribed benztropine but don’t take it cause it’s unbearable. I’d be open to trying gabapentin. right now the only med I take is my antipsychotic. It is well known Neurontin can cause depression and flattening of mood and suicidal thoughts like any anti epileptic can. particularly more for Gabapentin than other seizure meds when it comes to increasing agitation and aggressive behavior. I think it serves people well to know Gabapentin has been used to actually treat akathisia. Every single person responds different to different meds. I'm taking .5mg of clonazepam, 1200mg of gabapentin spread throughout the day, and 15mg of mirtazapine. Mirtazapine and 250mg of vitamin b6 early in the morning, gabapentin 3x a day, and the clonazepam I take half in the day and half late night. I have to time my doses correctly so I don't experience any akathisia. This subreddit is a place for those who suffer from akathisia.
