Gabapentin is an inhibitor of GABA, a Neurotransmitter. So when you think about it, it’s job is to inhibit the Neurotransmission of pain signals from receptors to the brain, and that’s how it helps reduce nerve pain. So called brain fog/sedation is strictly dose dependent. The higher the dose, the more severe it gets and vice versa. The high cost: gabapentin works to counteract seizures (and to reduce pain from neuropathy) by also effectively stopping the growth of new connections in the brain and nervous system. Gabapentin, marketed for the treatment of seizures and neuropathic pain, has been shown to increase in vivo GABA concentration in the brain of both rodents and humans. Gabapentin effects on glutamate are not known. I was taking 400mg 3 times a day and my dr increased the dose to 900mg three times a day. I slept for like 2 weeks from it, now I'm awake but very very spaced out kind of have a drunk like feeling. I waited on taking my meds after waking up just to make sure it wasn't a different med and it's definitely the gabapentin, anyone else have weird side effects? It helps with pain so I don't really I’ve been taking Gabapentin for 7-8 years. 900 mg 3 times a day. I take it for phantom pain. I’m a BK (Below Knee) amputee. It works wonders for my phantom pain, it gets rid of the pain 100%. The thing is, I’ve been experiencing heavy brain fog. I feel like I haven’t slept for hours and hours even though I’ve slept. Not the tired feeling per say, just the mind exhaustion. Gabapentin, a medication originally designed to treat seizures, has gained fame for its off-label uses, particularly for chronic pain and anxiety disorders. While many doctors prescribe it, a significant debate surrounds its safety. So I started taking gabapentin last week and I’m now having brain fog. My pharmacist was pretty useless and only said it was a normal side effect. For those of you that have taken gabapentin did the brain fog ever go away for you? I had been on Gabapentin for 3 years starting at 900mg and ramping up to the 2700mg in January and I decided I wanted to try something else. The only problem for me was increased pain in the last week, which I fully expected. I did not notice any withdrawal effects, so everyone's experience is different because for some, it's hard. A large U.S. medical records study has found that adults prescribed gabapentin six or more times for chronic low back pain face significantly higher risks of dementia (29%) and mild cognitive impairment (85%) within 10 years. I was reading up on gabapentin for anxiety and saw multiple things stating it will “take weeks to see the full effects” of the med — but why is this? I would think a gaba modulator would work immediately.
