Cat Veterinarian: CourtneyH129 I think it is unlikely that his current symptoms are related to either the limping or the gabapentin. Side effects from gabapentin in cats are usually just excessive sedation and drooling. And I would have expected you to start seeing issues after the first few doses if it was from the drug. The gabapentin we were given is liquid and although that was easy to give when he was eating (mixed in a Churu), now we've had to basically syringe it in his mouth and there's a lot of spitup and salivating so I'm not sure how much he is getting of that, but we don't think it's as crucial as the two other meds. The vet prescribed gabapentin for my cat, and after two doses she has become very sluggish and uncoordinated. While this does seem to be a normal side effect, it's still worrying to see her like this. We would like to show you a description here but the site won’t allow us. Second, gabapentin and Cerenia can synergize. Cerenia needs more time and resources to be deactivated by the liver and eliminated by the kidneys, during that time, gabapentin still floats through the cat's bloodstream. You're going to have to wait until more of the Cerenia has been cleared out before the level of gabapentin starts to go down. I sprinkle that on my cat’s food and it makes eating the Gabapentin easier. There’s also something called Crump’s Beef Sprinkles and you can put that on food also to add flavor or cover up tastes. But for those whose cats are on gabapentin, how many days did it take for you to notice positive effects? I have no experience with it, so I don't know in my gut if it's actually helping. My cat recently needed an antiviral pill twice a day for two weeks. I had no luck with a pill shooter, she won't eat treats so a pill pocket didn't work, she can still get a paw out of the towel and push my hand away, and she'd always shake her head right when I was trying to insert the pill. Upon returning from the vet, my cat did not feel well for several days, ate less, and was lethargic. However, he seemed to get better with the onsior (he didn't tolerate the gabapentin well) and he was almost back to normal until 4 days ago when he stopped eating as much and would not move unless I moved him. She also would not take her tuna juice and gabapentin, no matter how hard we tried to get her to eat it. While driving the rest of the way we ended up letting her out of the carrier, she seemed to do a little better after that. She would not eat, use the litter box, or sleep during the whole rest of the drive. We’ve called the emergency vet that treated her multiple times and they’ve made these suggestions: Space out the time we feed her her medicine (Gabapentin) and feed her meals—she may just be being picky. If she’s not eating by Monday (11/6), let them know and they’ll prescribe and appetite stimulant. From a safety perspective, a gabapentin dosage for cats will typically not exceed 50-100mg per cat to address pain or when being used as a sedative. As a sedative, it is often given the night before and again 2-3 hours prior to an examination at the vet clinic or before getting in the car or on a plane. My cat is highly food motivated and will eat anything, so if your cat is picky you may have to administer the medication with a pill popper device or a syringe depending on the form you have. For those that have given their cats Gabapentin, did you find any pattern as how far before or after their typical mealtime to time the dose to maximize the chance it will help them eat more? My cat is also on Mirataz mirtazapine ointment the past two days and it hasn't gotten him eating. Just Has anyone else had any experience using it for their cat? I personally used gabapention for several years for chronic pain and it made me fuzzy-headed (but didn't touch the pain) so I hope it works better for Muffin.
