Gabapentin Difficulties Hello everyone. My rabbit, Rory, was discovered to have two herniated discs that were probably genetic. Now that he’s a bit older, he has back pain and our vet prescribed gabapentin. They reconstituted the capsules into a gross smelling liquid that Rory Gabapentin is not used for minor pain or arthritis even if its use in persons suffering from osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia has been studied. Some US veterinarians do, nowadays, suggest the off-label administration of gabapentin to control pain in rabbits suffering from arthritis, without studies of effects and side-effects. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately. Otherwise I also agree that gabapentin is great and when needed metacam is one of the best but just has rare but potential long term issues. Despite being on Gabapentin and Metacam, losing an entire pound, and needing physio, my little senior bun got a pretty decent score from the vet ️ Hoping we have at least a few more months together that I can cherish My rabbit was on gabapentin for about two weeks when he broke some of his toes and was licking all the fur off. The idea was that the gabapentin acted to block pain differently than the metacam, and would maybe make the injured toes feel less weird, causing my rabbit to stop licking so much. Gabapentin is an “off-label” drug in rabbits, and is addictive, according to that article. I also have never seen gabapentin in rabbits but have seen fab things in dogs, and have read lots of goods stuff about it for rabbits too. In answer to your question, if it is the same as for dogs it is really good for longterm chronic pain, so should be okay!
