FRIDAY, July 11, 2025 A drug used to treat seizures, nerve pain and restless leg syndrome might be linked with increased risk of dementia, a new study says. Reg Gabapentin is FDA-approved as an add-on treatment for focal-onset seizures, helping improve seizure control alongside other therapies. In a randomized, double blind, placebo controlled trial conducted by Chadwick, et al., gabapentin demonstrated a significant reduction in seizure frequency compared to placebo in patients with refractory complex partial seizures. Various drugs and medications, including prescription, over-the-counter, and illicit substances, can trigger seizures as a side effect or complication. Prescription drugs are a leading cause of drug-induced seizures, with antidepressants accounting for nearly 42 percent of cases in one study, and common medications like Benadryl and cold medicines can also lower the seizure threshold.
