I started taking gabapentin in 2016 after stabbing, fiery nerve pain post an L5/S1 fusion. It allowed me to get off of opioids which for me had worse side effects. Side effects for me on Gabapentin did not include any weight gain. Mine were more typical such as drowsiness, unsteadiness on feet when first getting up and foggy thinking. Or I take 100 mg around dinner and another 100 mg 2 hours later I learned from reading the gabapentin sub Reddit.For many people, you get more effect if you stage it. Not here to say anything about gabapentin as I haven’t been on it, I have been taking pregabalin for over a year though and the side effects aren’t bad. They are very related drugs and so sometimes one is offered in place of the other. I take 50 mg twice a day. I was taking gabapentin 300mg 3x a day (prescribed) but was also abusing it so probably 1800/2000, moved to a different state and went cold Turkey just because I didn’t want to find a new doctor. Gabapentin seems to only affect me if I take like 1200mg or more. I’m prescribed 600mg a day but I don’t take them everyday so I have 2 whole prescriptions of the 300mg capsules plus a few extra. I just got prescribed 300mg of Gabapentin 3x a day, with the possibility to increase to 4x a day if needed. I knew that beginning the drug, there may be some mental health side effects, so I tried to watch for them, but I had absolutely no clarity or ability to consider that gabapentin was having such an adverse affect on my mental state until I stopped taking it. I had a very serious mental health episode while I was tapering off the drug too.
