Gabapentin is supposed to be really good for anxiety (arguably even amazing), but my doctor had said it's iffy as an anti-manic or anti-depressant "mood stabilizer." Mood stabilizer in quotes because it's kind of a bullshit term to describe meds that are either (or both) anti-manic or (atypical) anti-depressant agents. Buspar is pretty weak for bad anxiety. But if it works for some people, excellent. I take 3000mg of gabapentin a day. Usually 3 600mg in the AM and 2 600mg in the afternoon. I use it as a mood stabilizer, but it helps with anxiety and a whole host of other things. I don’t think Seroquel begins to antagonize dopamine until 200mg (ask the Seroquel sub-Reddit) and even then I thinks it’s only very tiny amounts. I have heard that even at 300mg it’s primary a mood stabilizer and an antipsychotic second. So maybe that could be an option, either at 300mg or below 200mg, whatever you feel comfortable with. Gabapentin is off label for bipolar disorder but from what my doctors have said its not really a good mood stablizer. I used it in the past for anxiety and it worked for that. 35 votes, 54 comments. If so, how does it work for you? How do you feel on it? Any bad side effects? Do you take any other medications with I’ve never heard of it being used on its own as a mood stabilizer. My bpso takes it for anxiety 3x day 300 mg in addition to zyprexa ( antipsychotic ) and depakote ( mood stabilizer .) To my knowledge , the only two medications that are approved exclusively for mood stability are depakote and lithium. Gabapentin for anxiety is an off label use. The safest and most efficacious mood stabilizer combinations appear to be the mixtures of anticonvulsants and lithium, particularly valproate plus lithium. Once the mechanisms of the mood stabilizers are identified, it is possible that a more rational approach to combination therapy will emerge, based on synergism at the sites of action. I'm type 2 and dug out a leftover gabapentin rx for my back and noticed I actually felt better, less bipolar depression and better energy. I looked it up and the only (?) study didn't show it works for it but anecdotal reports from individuals that are resistant to mood stabilizers have had some success and it can help with anxiety. I went to my appointment with my psychiatric nurse practitioner and she added a mood stabilizer “Lamotrigine” I think. She said that with sertraline/zoloft (SSRI) it can be hard to treat OCD if there is mood dysregulation, I’m scared what if I’m on to many things? But the thing was I wasn’t getting any effect from the sertraline at all. I just got prescribed 300mg of Gabapentin 3x a day, with the possibility to increase to 4x a day if needed. This is for long term management of anxiety but reading about everyone’s experience online is really stressing me out. I have had severe generalized anxiety for my entire life and have not responded well to any SSRI SNRI or Buspar. Has anyone been on this for a long time? If so, what We would like to show you a description here but the site won’t allow us. Gabapentin is a nerve pain medication and anticonvulsant that has proven to be effective for people who have hard-to-treat depression or other mood disorders. Does anyone take just gabapentin as a mood stabilizer? I’ve tried Lamictal (causes a rash inside my mouth and itchy eyes) and trileptal (made my period stop and caused severe balance issues) already. My psych wants to try gabapentin because she’s hesitant with prescribing antipsychotics, and I’m scared of them too. What are your experiences with gabapentin as a mood stabilizer? Also, did Is anyone taking gabapentin for mood stabilizer? What is your experience? Anyone taking only gabapentin for bipolar 2? I'm curious because I read about it and some reviews sound really good. I currently take lithium but need to up my dose to be more effective, and I don't want the collateral damage. Has anyone been prescribed gabapentin as a mood stabilizer? (instead of another anticonvulsant or lithium, for example) I feel that depakote even at the lowest dose is too strong for me but I don't do well without it either. This article reviews evidence-based psychiatric uses of gabapentin, along with associated risks. An extensive literature review was conducted, primarily of articles searchable in PubMed, relating to psychiatric uses, safety, and adverse effects of I actually found a psychiatric NP that can administer the GeneSight test, a genetic test that can provide info on which psychiatric meds (mood stabilizers, anti-depressants, anti-psychotics) your body will best metabolize. My psychiatrist recently put me on Gabapentin for as a mood stabilizer/ to address anxiety and depression ( we're exploring a possible Bipolar II diagnosis as well). Not questioning my psychiatrist but everything I’ve read on Gabapentin makes it seem like it’s not super effective for mood stabilization. I’m on Wellbutrin for depression and had to stop Lamotrigine, and his second choice after that was Gabapentin. Is it helpful for you guys?? I’ve heard it used for anxiety but not bipolar. I take Gabapentin (1200 mg/4x day). Due to problems with nearly all other known mood stablizers, it's the only med I can currently take. Research indicates that Gabapentin is good at lowering the highs, but though it can pull one out of deep depression, it's not as affective at pulling ppl out of low-grade depression on its own.
