Gabapentin is commonly prescribed for sciatica. But the evidence supporting its use for sciatic nerve pain is weak. Sciatica is a very common condition that’s also known as lumbosacral radiculopathy. Up to 40% of people will have sciatica within their lifetime. I had yet another appt with my dr about my crazy nerve pain (gabapentin is not doing the trick) and he prescribed cyclobenzaprine (flexeril) and methocarbamol (robaxin). Has anyone tried these for nerve pain and did they help you? There is currently an absence of high-grade evidence regarding the treatment of chronic sciatica (CS). Whilst gabapentin (GBP) and pregabalin (PGB) are both currently used to treat CS, equipoise exists regarding their individual use. In particular, Gabapentin is the only thing that helps my nerve pain! (Including opiates which help my other pain but not the nerve pain!) However it apparently has some potential for misuse and addiction (there's a whole subreddit about it r/gabapentin) I've only ever used it as prescribed and haven't had any issue with it Reply reply retiredhousewife1970 • Gabapentin for sciatica is considered alongside NSAIDs including naproxen or ibuprofen, corticosteroids and physical therapy to help in the pain management caused by this condition. Some side effects include depression, suicidal thoughts (contact your doctor if you experience these), confusion, dizziness, drowsiness, anxiety, and abnormal vision. By modulating the release of certain neurotransmitters involved in pain perception, Gabapentin can reduce the intensity and frequency of pain signals traveling from the sciatic nerve to the brain. For the 50% of people that gabapentin does work for, they usually dont get lots of pain relief from it until they're in the high dosage range, which is around 1500-3000mg PER DAY. Has anyone here tried Gabapentin for their sciatica and what where your results? I recently started Gabapentin (300mg, 3x daily) for sciatica in left leg due to pressure on nerve root from protrusion at L5-S1. My pain doc prescribed it as a stopgap until I get an epidural. The sciatica subreddit is the internet's largest community to find support, share stories (successful or otherwise!), and learn more about the challenging medical condition of radiculopathy. While not a cure, gabapentin has been shown in studies to significantly reduce the intensity of sciatic nerve pain for some patients. This medication works by calming overactive nerve activity and dulling pain signals to the brain. Have you consulted your neurologist on your intention to ween off the drug? Back pain can be a potential side effect of Gabapentin. If your back pain is related, it may decrease in severity or go away entirely within 1-3 months, on average. Gabapentin is usually well tolerated.
